[Mini Review] Buying leather remnants/scraps in Malaysia

It’s very hard to find shops that sell leather for crafting in Malaysia. From reading around most people end up buying leather online from shops in the US & from Europe and have it shipped over. MegaLeatherShop.com is one of the shops that pop up when you do a Google search to find leather in Malaysia (especially within the Klang Valley). There are a few more which I have yet to try because I need to drive to the shop to purchase it.

MegaLeatherShop has quite a few types of leather for sale but usually the minimum purchase quantity is 4 sq ft which is a little too big for what I wanted to do (basically to practice making small leather goods). Thankfully they do sell leather scraps in packs of 500g for RM45. Honestly I think they are the cheapest so far.

The packs contain a mix of leather types, colours and sizes. Leather remnants or leather scraps are usually off cuts and leftovers from other projects. They are expected to be weirdly shaped and may have flaws (marks, holes, etc).

I bought a pack and chose the shipping option which cost me a grand total of RM54.07 (RM9.07 for shipping via poslaju). Took a few days for me to receive it cos there was an issue with my address, but they processed it within a day after I paid. Payment option is only via bank transfer or cash/cheque bank in. No credit card option.

Here’s what I received:

Overview of all the pieces I received with a 30cm ruler for scale

My Thoughts:

Honestly I’m happy with what I received! πŸ™‚ It was a good mix of leather types and colours. 1 black, 2 dark grey-brown, 1 camel brown, and 1 red. The black leather was a much stiffer leather, the grey-browns and camel brown are soft leathers, and the red one was a suede type leather. I have no idea what specific types of leathers these are, I’m just a hobbyist. lol.

Flaws:

  • The grey-brown leather had silver pen marks on it. Wasn’t an issue as I was able to remove the marks using a non-alcohol baby wipe.
  • The red suede as seen in the photo has a huge branding mark which I will have to get creative about when I use it.

Overall I would definitely repurchase. Can’t wait to get started on making stuff out of these scraps. πŸ™‚

  1. Hi I would love to know what are the other shops u have to drive to for leather. Could you recommend?

    1. Hi! The other one I found was Chai Co (Shoe & Leather Material) which is in Taman Maluri, Cheras. https://chaisolution.wordpress.com/ I recommend calling before going to be sure they have a supply of leather materials that you can view. πŸ™‚

The other one I bookmarked is Malayan Leather Craft located in Taman Bukit Ria, KL. https://www.malayanleather.com/

I haven’t been to these two places yet but based on reviews it seems pretty good. Hope that helps!
